Pet Adoption Process
Step 2: Submit an adoption application
You may apply for an animal directly from our website as part of our pet adoption process. Simply click on the picture of the animal, then click the “Apply” button by their description. You may also apply during our open hours or ask for an application by emailing us at adopt@scituateanimalshelter.org, and we will send you the link to apply. Please apply for a specific animal in our care. We do not accept applications for 'any dog' or 'any cat.' Instead, please tell us the animal's name in your application.

Step 3: Wait to hear back from us
We always try our best to get back to applicants, but we do hope you understand that we sometimes receive so many applications for the same animal that it becomes impossible to get back to everyone. Please know we are very grateful for your interest and that our busy staff and volunteers are trying our best to respond—while we are also busy caring for our animals.
Step 4: Schedule a meet and greet
If the preliminary review is positive, we will invite you to visit the shelter for an in-person meeting. This is a crucial step to see how you and the animal interact and if there is a true connection. If it is not a match, we will work with you to find an animal that is a better fit.

Step 5: If you already own a dog
After your application has been approved, we require dogs to meet at our Shelter under the supervision of our staff. We suggest that all adoptions start with a 7-day trial period to ensure compatibility.
Step 6: Bring your new best friend home
The most exciting part, bringing your new pet home! For the first few weeks, we remain available for support and resources as your new family member settles in and begins their happy life with you.

Tips For Success
Bringing a new pet home is exciting, but adjusting takes time. A few simple steps can help make the transition easier:
-
Give Them Time To Adjust — Allow your pet time to get comfortable and settle in at their own pace.
-
Create A Safe Space — Provide a quiet, comfortable place where they can relax.
-
Keep A Routine — Consistent meals, walks, playtime, and bedtime can help your pet feel secure.
-
Take Introductions Slowly — Gradually introduce new people, pets, and experiences.
-
Use Positive Reinforcement — Praise and reward good behavior as your pet learns their new routine.
-
Ask Us For Help — Our team is here to provide support and resources along the way.
Important note: Animals are matched with many considerations in mind. Please do not feel bad if an animal you had your eye on went to another home. There are too many considerations to list here; they all boil down to what is in the best interest of each animal.
