More About Us
WHAT DRIVES US: The Epidemic of Unwanted Pets in the United States Millions of pets are euthanized each year because, quite simply, there are not enough homes for them. This unfortunate situation is referred to as “pet overpopulation” and there are numerous reasons for the problem including economic conditions, uninformed pet owners, and irresponsible and unintended pet breeding.
WHAT WE BELIEVE: Pet overpopulation can and should be addressed without resorting to unnecessary euthanasia of adoptable animals.
OUR MISSION The Scituate Animal Shelter exists to benefit both the companion animals and people of our community by operating as a no-kill animal shelter that provides adoption/rescue services and meaningful outreach programs which advance the welfare of companion animals, serve our community, and make a positive impact on pet overpopulation.
OUR STRATEGIES
1. Rescue. Operate as a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter, including:
- Adoption services - careful placement of adoptable animals
- Surrender services - pre-qualified animals
- Network with overcrowded Shelters; move animals to Scituate when possible
- Humane treatment of all animals - our Shelter leads by example
2. Serve. Facilitate accessible, affordable community programs, including:
- Qualifying Seniors
- Mary Hooper Elder Pet Care (HELP) program
- "Seniors for seniors" adoptions
- Regulatory & Health
- Immunization clinics
- Population Control
- Trap, Neuter, Release (TNR) of Feral Cats
- Age-appropriate spay/neuter of adoptable animals
