The girls of Hanover Junior Girl Scout Troop 80843 were working toward a Bronze Award and as such needed to perform 15 hours on a community service project. But what project??? They knew that they all loved animals. They also knew that at their ages--10 or 11--they were too young to volunteer at the Scituate Animal Shelter. So they came in for a tour of the shelter last fall and met with Sue Hart and Charlene McHale, members of the Shelter’s Educational Outreach Team.
After a good bit of brainstorming, the girls decided to make various items which they would sell to raise money for our shelter animals. They created “brownies in a jar”, “cocoa for two”, snack mix, popcorn, and chocolate covered pretzels, and sold them at a holiday fair. With the proceeds of their sales, because Girl Scout regulations prohibit them from giving the money directly to us, they purchased a brick in our walkway as well as a TON of supplies—paper towels, pet food, postage stamps, office supplies and gift cards. They also received donations for us at their cookie both sales, all the time educating their customers about animal kindness and spreading the word about the shelter’s existence and the work that it does.
But they didn’t stop there! They collected and donated items for the Shelter’s yard sale, made baked goods to sell at the yard sale…and they even helped to clean up afterward.
On Friday, June 11, at the Hanover Girl Scout town-wide bridging ceremony, the girls finally received their bronze award!!!! In recognition of their work for the shelter, they were also presented with the Vazza Award. The Vazza family established this award many years ago, in memory of their son and grandson, Colin Lewis Vazza. It’s presented each spring to a student or group of students who assist the shelter in some outstanding way with the work that it does. The girls of Troop 80843 truly were outstanding.
The girls in the troop are Katarina B., Jennifer B., Heather B., Jenna F., Julia G., Macy H., Hannah L., Ashley L., Audrey L., Emily P., and Jaime S.. Their inspirational leaders are Karen Goslin, Karyn Leslie and Laura Foley. Congratulations to them all!
