Scituate Animal Shelter
Our Story: Compassion . . . Generosity . . . Hard Work . . .

A bequest from Eleanor Haughey, a Scituate resident and quiet supporter of the Friends of the Scituate Animal Shelter, made the dream of a shelter a reality.
Through her legacy, funds were made available for the construction of a no-kill shelter. A town parcel on the Driftway was found to be ideal for the facility and construction of the Eleanor R. Haughey Animal Shelter was completed in 1992.
Over the next few months, the Friends of the Scituate Animal Shelter took over the shelter’s fulltime management. The core of volunteers continued to grow and the shelter began to be recognized throughout the region. Soon its geographic area of service had expanded and the shelter was serving the communities of Cohasset, Hingham, Hull, Norwell and beyond.
Today, more than 500 animals visit the Scituate Animal Shelter each year. Many are claimed within days, but those that remain receive food, love and veterinary care. Since the Scituate Animal Shelter’s humble beginning fifteen years ago, over 4,300 dogs, cats, rabbits, hedgehogs, ferrets, birds, guinea pigs, gerbils and hamsters have passed through our doors and been adopted into loving homes. Operated by the Friends of the Scituate Animal Shelter, the Scituate Animal Shelter is a not-for-profit 501(c)3, primarily volunteer, no-kill animal shelter that is funded solely by private donations. We serve the communities of the South Shore and are dedicated to the protection of animals and the advancement of their welfare.
Our Story: How Did We Get Where We are Today?
In 1985, the town of Scituate learned that the kennel used for animal control purposes would no longer take Scituate animals and no other facility was willing to accept responsibility. In response to this dilemma, the Scituate Board of Selectmen formed an Animal Shelter Study Committee. After extensive research, the committee recommended that a shelter facility be built in the town of Scituate. Over the next few years, a number of potential sites were suggested, but none were considered ideal. Meanwhile, the Friends of the Scituate Animal Shelter was incorporated as a non-profit entity and began holding small events—yard sales, bake sales and other similar fundraising activities—to raise funds for the future shelter.
